Ah, summer. The days getting hotter, the Sun staying out past its bedtime; together they can mean only one thing: you have got to find a way to cool off! You could head to Ocean City for the weekend and deal with the traffic on Route 50... you could even stay local and visit Hammerman Beach. Both have one major drawback (Ocean City much more so) though: crowds. When people want to go for a dip they think "beach" long before they even reach for a towel. So, what's the alternative? Community pool? Well, that's not very adventurous. It's time to think outside the box, people; and give swimming holes a chance.
The Pool at the Sweathouse Branch Wildlands Area is the perfect way to cool off after a long, summer day. To get there, take Belair Road north of Perry Hall. As soon as you cross over the Gunpowder River, there will be a parking lot on your left. Park in either the front or back lot, then make your way to the trail map posted in the front lot. Follow the trail to your left into a tunnel that runs under Belair Road. From there, it's a simple matter of paralleling the river for about 1.2 miles. Once you cross over the water, you are getting close. The trail dead ends at the Pool; so it's impossible to miss.
At its deepest, the Pool is about six and half feet down. There is a large boulder jutting into the water at an angle that is perfect for stretching out on. The Pool is pretty small- maybe 25-35 feet in diameter; but this is a good thing. It is so intimately sized, and placed far enough back on the trail, that there is rarely anybody there. It's not the kind of spot to bring along ten friends, but it is well suited for bringing the kids or for having a romantic swim/picnic. It is also a great spot to come to alone; if you're looking to get away from the hustle of modern life and just commune with nature. The whole area is draped in perpetual shade; so the water is a little cooler here than at other parts of the Gunpowder.
The hike to get to the Pool is short, but it should be just enough in this heat to work up a good sweat before you go for a swim. Just remember to pack some water and a towel (never leave home without one!), and that an adventurer is you!
