The Ponds at Lakeshore gives Michigan disc golfers added course variety

Disc golfer sizes up Hole 13 over the pond

The Ponds at Lakeshore is a fantastic new disc golf course that was established this year.  It is a former ball golf course in the Lakeshore Apartment Complex in Ypsilanti Township that was redesigned into a 24-hole disc golf course

Upon arrival to The Ponds, it may not seem like a challenging or technical course for more advanced players, but looks can be deceiving.  While the thought of a former ball golf course can lead players to picture nothing but wide-open fairways and sand traps, there are still some good quality obstacles to deal with on the course.  The openness of the course allows the wind to become a factor and the tees and pins are strategically placed so that the trees that are present must be accounted for.

Hole number 2 is the longest hole on the course measuring in at a staggering 990ft from the pro tee, but the distinction of signature hole goes to, without question, hole number 13.  The pro tee shot is a 300ft throw directly over a pond.  The amateur tee on hole 13 is a little less intimidating, but the water on the left side of the fairway is still a major factor and will certainly cause most players to put some extra thought into the throw.

The Ponds at Lakeshore also has a disc golf pro shop, called The Throw Shop, right on site.  The Throw Shop has an incredible selection of discs, featuring an excellent variety of brands and plastics.  They also sell disc golf bags, portable targets, and other miscellaneous merchandise.

Unlike a lot of Michigan courses, with tight, wooded fairways, The Ponds offers players a chance to use their arm strength on drives. It is a fun course, there is no charge to play, and it is definitely worth a visit, both for the course and The Throw Shop.
