A PS3 and Xbox 360 in one case--
It’s probably safe to say that a good number of tech and gadget fans in the SF Bay Area enjoy playing video games. But one industrious gamer has taken this to a new level by building a rig that encloses the working components of an Xbox 360 and a PlayStation 3 to produce a hybrid machine—The PlayStation 360.
Why?
A first-year student named Tim, at the Computer Games Technology department at the University of Portsmouth in the UK, explained he had free time during his summer off from school and decided to embark on his PS 360 project. The steps he took to make his project come to life are chronicled in his blog.
The PS 360
The build, according to Tim, didn’t hit any real snags, but one concern was how to keep the unit well ventilated. He decided to use traditional case fans to keep the monster cool because a liquid cooled rig would have been too expensive—he was on a budget.
The internal case temperature of the PS 360 hovers around 38-39 degrees Celsius (100 to 102 Fahrenheit) when both halves are turned on.
Was it worth the effort?
Having two separate game consoles isn’t really that big of a deal; you turn one on and leave the other one off and vice versa. So what was the point of combining the two machines into one PC case?
Why do people climb Mt. Everest? Why do people explore the depths of the Mariana Trench? Why did Neil Armstrong first set his foot on the moon? Why did Tim build a PlayStation 360?
“The project was solely for fun, just to see if I could do it - so please don't bother telling me it’s a pointless or stupid thing to do, because I don't care.”
Well said, Tim.
The rig looks awfully cool. Now, if he could cram a Nintendo Wii and an iPad in there that would be the really awesome.
Maybe next summer?
