Meet photographer Hena Tayeb, born in Chicago, Illinois, she was packed up and moved to Karachi, Pakistan when she was ten. She said that she was not too enthused about it in the beginning but learned to love the country and its culture. Hena is in her mid twenties, married nearly three years and just had her first baby; a beautiful baby boy (congratulations). Hena loves to take pictures, but hates to be photographed herself. She loves finding unusual abstracts in everyday places that are familiar to everyone, she especially loves photographing hands, "they tell so much about a person's character" she said. She also likes photographing ordinary items in a way that they appear extraordinary.
How did you choose your shop name? My shop is named after myself Hena Tayeb Photography. The photographs I take are a reflection how I see the world. I could find no word to describe it. I chose my name to represent me because I am the brand. When you buy my work you buy a piece of the world the way I see it.
In your opinion what is the most important factor to running a successful on-line shop or business? Promoting. Promoting. Promoting. You may have the most exquisite product in your shop but if people don’t know it is out there then there is no point. It’s as if you never made it.
What do you do for fun when you aren't crafting? My process is a bit different from crafters. I spend a certain amount of time taking photographs, then I spend some editing and making sure the final photograph is nothing but the best. After that the rest of my time is spent promoting, marketing and keep my shop up to date. When I am not doing any of that I like to spend time with my family, relax with a good book or unwind in front of the television.
How do you promote your business? I blog, twitter and carry business cards around with me where ever I go. And most of all keep my shop full at all times.
Where would you like to see yourself in the next 5 years? Currently I get a few sales a month, in 5 years I’d like to be getting a few sales a week. One of my illustrations was just picked to be on next month's cover of Underwired magazine. I would like to see a lot more of that. My work featured in a magazine or used in the set design on TV. Now that would be great!
Do you have any advice for other small shop or business owners? Do not give up. It was four months till I got my first sale. That fourth month brought me four sales. Also set realistic goals for yourself. That way you have less room for disappointment.
