The garden gates are swinging wide open; and this upcoming weekend and next weekend will be the busiest among garden retailers in Philadelphia and the entire Southeastern region of Pennsylvania. Garden centers, as well as, grocery and hardware stores are anticipating the official start of the 2012 gardening season. Next Tuesday, May 15 is considered the “safe date” to plant vegetables, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees here in Philadelphia without the threat of frost; although with the extreme weather patterns that Philadelphia has been experiencing over the last 6 months, anything could happen.
At the garden center, you’ll find hanging baskets, flats of annuals, pots of blooming perennials, summer blooming bulbs, shrubs, trees, fertilizers, weed killers, mulch, and much more. It’s time to clean out the garden beds, if you haven’t already, and hang the hanging pots, plant those seedlings you’ve started indoors, fill the garden with annuals, divide your perennials, prune spring-flowering shrubs, sow vegetable seeds directly into the soil, and don’t forget the lawn care.
