Did you know?
The 30th President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, and his wife Grace Coolidge, were famous for housing many strange pets at the White House. President Coolidge and his wife were both born in Vermont and learned in their youth to love and appreciate animals. They shared their time and love with:
Two White Collies, two Terriers, two raccoons, a donkey, several birds, rabbits, a goose, a bobcat, two lion cubs, a Pygmy Hippopotamus, a Shetland Sheepdog, two other Collies, two Chow Chow's, a German Shepard, a Bulldog, a bird dog, a few cats, a Duiker, a dozen or so Pekin ducks, a Wallaby and a Black Bear named Bruno!
That is a lot of pets (I apologize for missing any)! Many of the more exotic pets ended up at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and Rock Creek Park while some, like their raccoon Rebecca, were known to wander the White House halls.
