Looking for something to warm you up during Pennsylvania’s record low temperatures? Since it is not wise to venture outside during a snowstorm, here’s a suggestion for a hot drink that you can make at home that will keep you warm and cozy. Mulled, or steeped, wine is easy to make and it’s perfect for those cold nights. What is mulled wine? It is red wine that is “steeped” in spices and served warm.
The most common recipe includes one 750ml bottle of red wine, 1/3 cup of sugar, and mulling spices, such as cloves, lemon or orange peel, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla beans. Most recipes prefer the spices to be whole so the flavors will steep into the wine as it simmers. To steep the wine it is best to use a Crock Pot on low setting so the wine does not boil. If you do not have a Crock Pot, simmer in a pot on the stove for 10-15 minutes.
If you don't have the spices on hand, a quick and easy way to enjoy this warm drink is to find a wine that is already sweetened and spiced. Spiced Red Wine from Paradox Vineyards, a local winery in Chester County, is a nice option. Spiced Red Wine comes in a 3.5 Liter can that looks just like a can of paint. Yes, a can! The can includes a spout for easy pouring. The wine is already steeped with cloves, cinnamon and cardamom pods. So, all you have to do is warm and drink.
You can find Spiced Red Wine for $39.99 per can at Paradocx Vineyards and in two local farmers markets, Booth's Corner Farmers Market in Garnet Valley, PA and The Market at Liberty Place in Kennett Square, PA.
Try mulled wine this week, they are predicting arctic cold this winter.
