The story Jesus tells about the Ten Virgins is quite significant to the Christian way of life. The parable depicts ten young women, five of which were prepared and the other five were not.

“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of the virgins were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish ones took their lamps, they did not take extra olive oil with them. But the wise ones took flasks of olive oil with their lamps. When the Bridegroom was delayed a long time, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look, the Bridegroom is here! Come out to meet him.’ Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ No,’ they replied. ‘There won’t be enough for you and for us. Go instead to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ But while they had gone to buy it, the Bridegroom arrived, and those who were ready went inside with Him to the wedding banquet. Then the door was shut. Later, the other virgins came too, saying, ‘Lord, lord! Let us in!’ But He replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I do not know you!’ Therefore stay alert, because you do not know the day or the hour (Matthew 25:1-13)”.

This parable teaches the imperative nature of being prepared. Having faith is not something to find at the last minute. For no one knows the time when our Lord will return for the Final Judgment, all must be ready as if it were to happen today. Do not wait until tomorrow to better yourself as a person. Be ready today.

The act of getting ready must be ongoing. Since perfection is not possible among humans, there is always room for improvement and means to better oneself until our Lord’s return. Be not like the foolish young women who did not have enough oil to sustain their lamps. Always be prepared! Have enough oil to keep the Light burning all night long. Do not miss your chance to be with Jesus in His Kingdom.

This light signifies the Word of God, the actual faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Those foolish virgins epitomized those without enough viable faith in our Lord. the wise young women were ready and eager to meet Jesus. We all must strive to be like them. Go and do as the wise virgins.

Beloved, you must go and prepare yourself for our Lord. The time is nearing. Do not wait until it is too late. Act now. Ensure you increase your praying, repentance and civility towards your fellow man. Go and do likewise as the wise virgins. Be prepared for Jesus as He is preparing for our Judgment.
