The Palm Springs International Film Festival opens today featuring a movie from Spain on opening night. The annual event kicks off with a screening of Blancanieves at 6:30p.m. at Palm Springs High School. The film fest runs through January 14 and though many films and events are sold out, some tickets remain.
The opening gala ceremony will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Honorees at the gala include Richard Gere and Helen Mirren. Gere is slated to receive the Chairman’s award and Mirren will be honored with the International Star award. Academy award winning director, Tom Hooper, will receive the Sonny Bono Visionary Award and Mychael Danna will be presented the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing. Hooper is best known for his film, The King’s Speech and also directed this year’s acclaimed Les Miserables. Danna created the score for The Life of Pi.
The Palm Springs International Film Festival will screen movies featuring Alan Arkin, Annette Bening, Helena Bonham Carter, Don Cheadle, Toni Collette, Marion Cotillard, Matthew Fox, Quincy Jones, Tommy Lee Jones, Al Pacino, Vanessa Redgrave, Chris Rock, Terence Stamp, Marisa Tomei, Liv Ullmann, and Christopher Walken.
