‘The Descendants,’ one of this year’s nominees for Best Picture, is a family drama starring the lovable George Clooney. The story is set in Hawaii and picks up with the mother, Elizabeth, in a terminal coma as the result of a boating accident. Land owner Matt (Clooney) who refers to himself as the “back-up parent” has to step up. Not only must he reconnect with his two daughters but he has to prepare them for their mother’s imminent death. Along the way he learns the woman he loves may not have been who he thought she was.
This is Clooney at his best and his performance has also been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role. While the subject matter is of a serious nature, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun cheering for it to win, if you’re a fan.
Several of the pizza chains carry Hawaiian pizza. I can personally vouch for Domino’s Honolulu Hawaiian Pizza which starts with a delicious parmesan asiago crust and is topped with sliced ham, bacon, pineapple and roasted red peppers and provolone cheese. If you like your pizza with a little more zip, they also have Fiery Hawaiian Pizza which adds hot sauce and jalapenos to the dish. If you want to try your hand at a simple Hawaiian dish at home, you can always try the traditional plate lunch served all over the islands. The plate lunch consists of two scoops of white rice, a scoop of macaroni salad and an entrée of your choosing. Typical Hawaiian entrees might include teriyaki beef, a hamburger patty smothered in brown gravy or if you want something with more of a Hawaiian flavor, kalua pork.
