The origin of rebellion

The news seems to be full of stories of some sort of rebellion or another that leaves people perplexed when they hear about them. Take for instance a story on the Houston Television station KPRC Channel 2 about a couple of teen boys who snatched an elderly woman’s purse at a bus stop. There is also the case of a grandson who beat his ailing grandmother after she kicked him out of her house for stealing from her.

There are some who may hear these stories and ask why would these young men commit such actions and what is the solution to curve such behavior? For the born-again believer in Jesus Christ the solution is having an understanding of such verses as Proverbs 22:6:

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6, KJV)

This proverb teaches that parents have the authority to train a child in the correct way that they should go. The key to such parental teaching is to instill humility in their child. Parental authority is the required environment that every child needs if he or she is to have any hope of happiness in their lives. It is up to the parent to restrain their child’s sin nature through discipline and training. What are those sin nature tendencies that parents must restrain? The Bible gives a list of some of our sin nature tendencies in Galatians 5:19-21:

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21, KJV)

The word “flesh” in verse 19 is reference to the sinful nature that every human being possesses since the fall of Adam. Adultery and fornication refers to illicit sexual intercourse outside of marriage. The group of carnal deeds listed in these verses would also include murder, as well as drug addiction, found in the word, “witchcraft.”

The Greek word translated “witchcraft” is pharmakeia and originally included the use of drugs to induce a trance for contacting the spirit world and eventually came to mean drug addiction. In addition, the use of an excessive amount of alcohol would dull the senses and lowered the inhibitions in the participants. The influence of these substances made these participants vulnerable to orgiastic rites. Also included in this list is enmities, hatred, jealousy, outburst of anger, disputes and divisions. The Epistle of 1 Corinthians also includes such sin nature tendencies as stealing, greediness, slandering and swindling (1 Cor. 6:9-10).

Unfortunately, when passive parents fail to restrain the sin nature tendencies in their children when they are young, we as a society will suffer a social decay. The life in adulthood of untrained children will reflect such actions as those men in our featured stories.

It is at this point that the lawful violence of Law enforcement must intervene to subdue the lawless violence of the criminal elements in our society. Law enforcement is the God ordain organization that the Lord uses to restrain individual’s sinful nature tendencies. It is imperative that Law enforcement be a constant guard to keep those in check who would destroy freedom within our nation. It is unfortunate that law enforcement has to intervene to restrain sin natures because many passive parents fail to do so in the home.

For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. (Romans 13:3-4, KJV)

Therefore, the origin of rebellion starts from the sinful nature that we all have and parents have a responsibility to restrain it through the discipline and training of their children. Otherwise, the restrain may have to come from law enforcement. And while sin is not the issue at salvation because Christ died for all sin, sin does become an issue in human life because they attack human freedom and human relationships.
