The Open Stage will be celebrating its 100th show on Monday, February 4th in Richardson. The weekly combination of variety stage acts and open mic was started almost two years ago by members of the Circus Freaks performance troupe. Since that time, hundreds of people have taken the stage, many of them performing publicly for the first time.
One of the reasons so many new talents have debuted at the Open Stage is the supporting and nurturing atmosphere maintained by the regulars. Anyone so much as mentioning something they have considered trying is encouraged to “Step Up” (an Open Stage unofficial motto) and do it. Even if the act is not polished enough for the main show, the stage is opened up afterward for people to simply get up into the bright lights and see what it is like.
For those who would rather simply watch a show rather than joining in, though, the variety seen here is hard to match. The open stage has seen singers, dancers, jugglers, burlesque, comedians, storytellers, magicians, and acts which defy easy classification. Food and hookahs are available to enjoy during the show.
The Open Stage takes place every Monday at the House of Poets, 580 W Arapaho Rd #199, Richardson, TX. Doors open at 7 pm, and the show begins at 8. More information can be found at the Circus Freaks website.
