While football’s regular season is halfway over, basketball season is just getting underway and there are few places outside of a stadium seat that can offer the same atmosphere as being inside of Johnny’s Tavern at game time.
The rustic green building that resides at 401 N. 2nd St. in Lawrence, Kan. dates back to the early 1900s when it was a simple grocery store and hotel. In 1953 John Wilson turned it into a bar for local farmers. It is still a bar for locals, but now there are nine locations scattered across Eastern Kansas. Johnny’s has been a staple of Lawrence culture for more than half of a century, so stopping in for a game is a must; and once you have you will be glad you did.
Start with the Shrimp and Aisiago Dip, Battered Green Beans or keep it easy with a basket of Peanuts. Move from there to the stone oven pizzas that have been creating smiles since before Andrew Wiggens was born. There are options for everyone from the Chicken Ranch or BBQ Chicken to the Arrowhead which comes with Canadian bacon, jalapenos and pineapple. The menu makes it an ideal place to meet family or friends for a game or, any event worth celebrating.
It gets better for those who enjoy a cold beer on occasion. There are several quality beers available, but you can get those beers at any good bar. What you cannot, however, get at any other good bar is Johnny’s Blue Collar Lager, and that is because it is brewed exclusively for Johnny’s Tavern locations by the Freestate Brewing Company.
No matter the season Johnny’s is a great spot to get a slice of pizza or gather for a birthday party. No matter the reason it will be worth your while to stop in.
