The Great NYS Fair kicks off today with all the hoopla this town can muster. Rides, games, food, beer, wine slushies, and music; mainly oldies and country with one rock act that gets the nod today in Korn at the Grandstand. Unlike others in this town no I don’t see the excitement of Carly Rae and wouldn’t make that a ‘must-see’ pick if you shot me. Come on man, her over the legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd? One song (I know, I have kids) over a catalogue of radio-worn tunes?
Then again who gets excited over Salt N Pepa. Chevy Court looks like it should be free this year along with an apology card. Not much to add here as I don’t see an act that makes anyone go YES! ‘Nuff said.
The Midway and Regional Stages have a few decent names onboard but I’m not seeing anything there that hasn’t been jammed down our throats at every ‘festival’ or beerfest all year to be honest. Who gets excited over a tribute band so much that we have them as a must-see? Or another tribute band that will be featured at two local venues (again) already?
Who knows, but free is free so you do get a chance to see some legends and some new names (at least to me) at all of these stages so do take a walk by, you never know!
Okay so who do I see that pops off the list that I would say yes, check them out (To the others, maybe I just don’t know you so….)
Let’s see, the Midway Stage there is….ummm….yeah; they have music there. Get a list at the gate maybe.
The Regional Artist Variety Stage: a few jumped out at me and if you really love grooved out tunes with some wicked horns then Grupo Pagan is a must on the 31st. The 24th is PopRox, 80’s tunes with all the zany style of the day so that can be fun; Emerald City on Sept. 2nd. After those, aside from Lisa Lee on the 29th, you got me.
So, where to go if you want some rock without feeling like you just saw that band last week? Simple, the 95X Locals Stage looks to be the best bet, now if only they had more acts there! If I am there that day, that is where I’ll be.
8/22 - Stone Soul Foundation
8/23 - Hold The Air
8/26 - Justin Mustard
8/27 - The Afro Nips
8/28 - Sean Patrick Taylor
8/29 - Scott Danger Bravo / Mike from Phantom Chemistry
So good luck at the Fair this year. At least you can go see some displays all lit up in the evening this year but please, look out below for both the cow dung and all the chewing tobacco spit, you may want to rethink those flip-flops.
