Everybody has, or should have, an uncle like Drosselmeier. You know the type. The guy that made you laugh just entering a room. The guy who didn't seem to care what anybody else thought. The guy who taught you to drive a stick shift, shoot a gun, operate a chain saw. The guy who showed you how to make fart noises from your armpit. The guy your parents tried not to laugh at in your presence. The guy who gave you the gifts you really wanted. The guy about whom Sinatra's song "My Way" was written. The guy who loved you to pieces.
I have the pleasure of being that guy, Drosselmeier, in the Harford Dance Theatre production of The Nutcracker in its final weekend at the Amoss Center for the Performing Arts at Harford Community College.
Drosslemeier has some pretty good moments. He attends the party that opens the show, spooking everyone with his entrance. He has gifts for the children, presents boxes of magic dancing dolls, and flirts with the ladies.
For his favorite niece, Clara, he has the best gift of all - A beautiful hand-carved nutcracker. The eventful evening leads Clara to dream about mice and tin soldiers, snow dancers, angels, sugar plum fairies, ethnic dancers, and fabulous Tchaikovsky music.
Dream along with Clara, and as a bonus you might just learn how to make fart noises from your armpit.
