The North High School Jazz Band will appear at the Jazz Workshop tonight

The Bakersfield Jazz Workshop will focus on young jazz talent this week by featuring the North High School Jazz Band at Le Corusse Rouge. Led by band director Mike Wawrzynski, the appearance of the band demonstrates the BJW's mission to support jazz education in the Bakersfield area.

Wawrzynski is in his first year as the director of bands for the North High Alliance Band Program. He graduated from Western Michigan University in April 2013 and is a native of Warren, Michigan. Before accepting his position with North High, he was a much sought after band instructor across the state of Michigan. Additionally, he has performed numerous times in various bands and ensembles across the United States, including the Warren Concert Band, Western Michigan University Bronco Marching Band, University Symphonic Band, University Concert Band, Faculty Brass Ensemble, Commencement Brass Ensemble, WMU Jazz Lab Band, and various Tuba/Euphonium ensembles and chamber groups.

He is affiliated with the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

The jazz band is assisted by Mr. Thompsett.

The band's 7:30 p.m. appearance will be preceded by the BJW's Beginning Jazz class at 6:30 p.m. and followed by an open jazz jam session. As with all of its weekly events, the workshop is free and open to all ages.
