Individuals in the Atlanta area have an exceptional opportunity to learn about the noetic sciences. Unity North Atlanta Church is sponsoring ongoing meetings every Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 pm in their Administration Building. For general information, please contact Cathy De Anne by phone at (919) 522-8132.
The next meeting will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2013, and will be focused on discussing the book by Rupert Sheldrake entitled “Science Set Free: Ten Paths to New Discovery.” Sherry Crelin and Dan Ross will facilitate this discussion on Sheldrake’s newest book and lead participants through some experiential activities based on his extensive research on morphogenesis and parapsychology. Sheldrake, a British biochemist, is best known for his theory of morphic fields and morphic resonance suggesting a living, developing universe with an inherent memory. “Science Set Free” explores why science needs to allow a more open-minded method of inquiry for future discovery and understanding.
Future discussions will continue to focus on what IONS has learned since 1972, and about the connection between science and spirituality. Edgar Mitchell, an American astronaut who walked on the moon, had a mystical experience during his 3-day return trip to Earth on that Apollo 14 mission. "The presence of divinity became almost palpable, and I knew that life in the universe was not just an accident based on random processes.... The knowledge came to me directly," Mitchell said of that experience. In 1972, he started the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS).
IONS identifies its primary programs as extended human capacities, integral health and healing, and emerging worldviews. A special research focus involves studying “the observer” in experiments. According to the IONS website, the Institute “also advances the study of consciousness by training young scientists interested in noetic topics through its internship program and facilitating strategic collaborations and invitational meetings among scientists and scholars to accelerate development of new, cross-disciplinary studies of consciousness and transformation. In addition, it synthesizes bodies of knowledge, such as the science of meditation or the role of compassion in healing, disseminates these summaries, and uses what it learned to identify next steps. Finally, it communicates what it learned in peer-reviewed scientific journals and scholarly meetings, and it translates findings into educational products and curricula for targeted audiences and the general public.”
