The NITE Ride: See Indianapolis in a new bicycle light

Indiana offers a wide variety of bicycle riding opportunities, for every level of bicyclist.  Are you a neighborhood cruiser or Monon Trail rider looking for new roads to try?   To see Indianapolis in a new "bicycle" light, try the 18th N.I.T.E (Navigate Indy This Evening) Ride.

Organized by the Central Indiana Bicycle Association (CIBA, www.cibaride.org), the NITE Ride is a 20-mile ride through downtown Indianapolis, starting at 11 PM (at night!) on the last Saturday in June. You will have over 3,000 riders of every age and ability for company.  Along with Monument Circle downtown, the route includes the Butler neighborhoods, the Indiana Museum of Art and portions of the White River Parkway before returning to the IUPUI campus.  Police and volunteers control traffic at all intersections and bicyclists have complete lanes on many portions of the route.

New for 2011, the NITE ride will move to a new start location,  Carroll Stadium, on the IUPUI Campus.  The NITE ride has simply outgrown the Major Taylor Velodrome, with participation growing 20% that last 2 years. IUPUI offers over 9,000 parking spaces, with walking and riding proximity to downtown, the Cultural Trail, White River State Park, Victory Field and the Indiana State Museum IMAX Theatre,  to name just a few of the possibilities for pre-ride activities.

Along with an evening of festivities at the start of the event, there is a mid-ride food stop, followed by a dinner after the ride.  The 2011 NITE will be held June 25, 2011.  Registration is $23 per rider ($29 after 5/29/11) and you can learn more at www.niteride.org.  Bicycle lights and helmets are required.

The NITE Ride offers a unique and views of Indianapolis by bicycle.  If you are already comfortable riding for an hour or two, the NITE ride would be a great way to expand your riding experience.
