The next Twilight

The Twilight craze isn't even over yet, and already Hollywood is looking for the next big thing. And they might have found it in Cassandra Clare's bestselling trilogy, The Moral Instruments.

The books follow Clary and a group of shadow hunters (fancy name for demon hunters) on a hunt for her mother who has gone missing, a search for her father who had been presumed dead, and a fight against evil.  You know, just your everyday life of the average teenager.  Along the way, warlocks, vampire, and faeries come into the mix.

The latest on the progress of the potential film is the hiring of Jessica Postigo, who wrote Operation Checkmate, to write the screenplay.  Unique Features optioned the film rights a few months ago.

Now for the fun part ... who'll be in the movie?  Although it's impossible to say at this point, Clare did have some fun and compile a list of actors who had been suggested by fans of the series, and who she thought would work well.  For the main character, Clary, she suggested Canadian pop star turned actress Alexz Johnson, from Final Destination 3 and Smallville.

And for Clary's love interest, Jace?  Alex Pettyfer seems to be a popular choice.  He's up and coming, with only a handful of small films under his belt, but he's blond and pretty, which fits the description of Jace.  You're best bet of getting a look at him is in the 2006 movie Stormbreaker with Ewan McGregor and Micky Rourke.  If you can wait until next year, you'll be able to see him playing the lead role in the film Beastly opposite Vanessa Hudgins (High School Musical) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother).

Check out Cassandra's complete "imaginary cast" to find out where people like Viggo Mortenson and Ewan McGregor fit into the mix.  And if you're already a big fan of The Mortal Instruments, there's a jewelry line available.  (Sorry, no cardboard cutouts a la Edward and Jacob from Twilight are available just yet.)
