What happens when you get three Finnish girls who listen to too much Afrika Bambaataa, Cansei de Ser Sexy and Bonde do Role? Disaster, surely. After all, Finland is the home of death metal; what would they know about synths and party music? Well, you’d be wrong.
Going by the name Le Corps Mince de Francoise (Francoise' skinny body), sisters Emma and Mia Kemppainen and their friend Malin Nyqvist have produced something rather wonderful. Their last single, Bitch of the Bitches, is an electropop classic; if you think of CSS covering Martha and the Muffins’ Echo Beach, then you will be both grinning from ear to ear and not far off the mark.
Their new release, Ray-Ban Glasses, coming out on New Judas records, is a slower, funkier track, mixing new wave jerkiness with the bounce of a favela party. Actually, it’s not a million miles away from These New Puritans, with whom they share a certain spirit of adventure, if none of the studied detachment.
The band is currently in the studio recording their debut album; hopefully this will get a full scale release over here in the US. In the meantime, there’s a free download of a remix to keep you going.
You’ll dig this band if you like: Le Tigre, CSS, walking down the street with a swagger in your step
