The new 'Skylanders' lets you capture villains and add them to your team

Activision revealed Skylanders Trap Team, the fourth installment in the popular franchise, today at a press event in New York City, opened by company CEO Eric Hirshberg.

Skylanders Trap Team introduces a whole new cast of Skylanders, as well as new characters called Trap Masters, and will allow players to use “traptanium crystals” (or traps) to capture defeated villains and then send them back to fight on their side.

"For the last three years we've allowed players to breathe life into video games, to bring toys to life. This year we're going to bring life to toys,” Hirshberg said.

In Skylanders Trap Team, returning chief villain Kaos discovers the traptanium-made Cloudcracker Prison — guarded by the Trap Masters — and blows it up, sending the Skylanders and crystals to earth and freeing all the prisoners.

After defeating a villain, players must plug the Trap into the newly designed portal to capture them; some villains shown at todays event were Chill Bill, a troll with a freeze ray that turns enemies into ice, and Shrednaught, a lumberjack tank driven by two trolls. Also revealed was that for the first time in the franchise, Kaos will be a playable character, but of course, you have to catch him first.

The new portal comes equipped with a speaker that really sells the idea of players dragging an enemy out of the television and into the crystals.

New Skylanders were revealed today, as well, including Snap Shot, a bow-wielding reptile; Wallop, who dual wields crystal hammers; Chopper, a dinosaur strapped to a mini helicopter suit; and Food Fight, a little green creature armed with a vegetable gun.

Additionally, players will be allowed to use all Skylanders they have collected for previous entries in the series — which accumulates to 175 action figures in total for the three games.

As for this new game, over 50 new Skylanders are said to eventually be supported, as well as over 40 villains that can be trapped.

Skylanders Trap Team is slated for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and 3DS on October 5, 2014 in North America and October 10 in Europe. The starter pack will cost $74.99; pre-orders have already begun.
