Hometown hero, Irvin Mayfield, and his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra will be breaking ground on the New Orleans Jazz Market in Central City tomorrow.

Located at the corner of Oretha Castle Haley and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards the former Gators department store will now house a performance venue, rehearsal room, and will host educational programs for all ages, performances and seniors events, as well as maintain an archive of New Orleans jazz.

The groundbreaking will take place on Tuesday, February 25, at 10 A.M. at the future site of the Jazz Market - 1436 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. There will be performances by Irvin Mayfield, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Ellis Marsalis. Marsalis and 102-year-old New Orleans treasure, Lionel Ferbos, will be the first inductees into The Jazz Market’s Walk of Fame.

Speakers will include Charles Brown, New Orleans Public Library; Jim Singleton, New Orleans Redevelopment Authority; Margaret Anadu, Goldman Sachs; Neal Morris, Redmellon Restoration and Development; Ronald Markham, NOJO; Scott Hutcheson, City of New Orleans; and Steve Perry, New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau.
