In the upcoming game from Bethesda called Wolfenstein: The New Order, the main antagonist is a character named Deathshead who is a very intriguing monster for many reasons.
At the surface, Deathshead seems to be a bit of a soft-spoken individual who has some love and life inside of him, but then you see his actions, you realize just how insane this man is.
He brings an interesting dichotomy as the main villain. We typically don't see that type of character with traits of love and happiness being associated with them. This contrast is of course by design and is exactly what Jens Matthies, who is the creative director on Wolfenstein: The New Order, wants you to see.
In an exclusive interview with Examiner.com, Matthies discussed a scene where Deathshead forces the player to choose between one of his friends dying versus the other. We were able to play through the scene prior to talking with him and it is a rather heart-wrenching cinematic to witness.
When Deathshead is speaking in this scene, we get a clear picture of how people will at first assume this man is a gentle, happy man, but then how that assumption is quickly erased with his violent, cerebral actions.
Matthies explained why he wanted to create a character with such dichotomy.
"So for Deathshead, I had this idea that he would be this really happy guy. Sometimes there is a lot of really rich soil in opposites because that's the firs thing you think about when you're trying to think of the most horrible character in the world.
"But I had this idea that because he survived a crash, that that would reignite his love of living and it all would be a joy ride for him. But of course, that isn't the reality we present with Deathshead," Matthies said.
The reality is a very creepy, intimidating one and it is one that players will surely enjoy. Stay tuned for more exclusive news regarding Wolfenstein: The New Order. For all of our latest exclusives, previews, reviews and features, follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook.
