The new Hotel Renew -- a Best Bet at Waikiki

Aston Hotels and Resorts are well-known in the Hawaiian Islands, but many vacationers have not yet discovered Aston’s new boutique hotel that is unlike any other property in the heart of Waikiki.

Just a two-minute walk from Waikiki Beach, the uniquely tranquil and intimate Hotel Renew has been renovated to look like a completely new property.

It has only 72 rooms that depart from the typical Hawaiian fare with tiki torches. Instead, San Francisco designer Jiun Ho employs textured woods and fabrics in a modern urban chic décor of a palette of monochromatic colors and high-end furnishings with just an occasional splash of bright color.

My room had a picture perfect view of Waikiki Beach. Although it was possible to open the windows, I closed them and turned on the air conditioner to successfully block most of the traffic noise below. At night, with the air conditioner off, the temperature was just right.

Each morning, there was coffee, fresh fruit and pastries in the small lounge which also served as the cocktail bar and gathering place in the evening. Because the area was usually crowded, I preferred to pick up the daily newspaper and take the continental breakfast to my nearby room.

The continental breakfast and newspapers were just a few of the perks offered by the new Club Renew, an enhanced amenity package for all the guests. The amenity fee of $25 also included:

o Free access to the Marriott’s two resort pools and full-service fitness facility across the street
o Use of the hotel’s beach towels, mats and chairs
o Complimentary DVD rentals
o Weekly free mixer with hosted cocktails by the friendliest expert bartenders
o Signature drinks each evening at bargain Happy Hour prices
o Wireless Internet access throughout hotel
o Mobile concierge service for booking restaurants, tours, and transport
o eReaders for each guest to use
o Free local and toll-free calls

Best of all, the entire staff could not have been more courteous and helpful.

The price of my room was about the same as the large Aston Hotel next door, while a room with a similar view at the Marriott Hotel across the street would have cost me about $100 more each day.

The next time I’m in Waikiki, I plan to head straight for Hotel Renew.
