This came as a surprise to many people as they had expected someone a bit, younger, to take on the role. If not younger, then perhaps less known (or maybe even British since that seems to be the trend right now for Super-hero movies). It’s important to look at this casting from all angles. There could be some good things to go along with the negatives that people keep focusing on.
Let’s start with the bad things that people keep looking at.
Age. Yes it’s a bit touchy to use that as an excuse but it is what it is. Batman is a very physical role and based on what they want to do with the movie then it looks like we might be dealing with a lot of a stunt double and it’s not like it’s Spider-man where he’s completely covered. It will obvious when it’s a stunt double and not him and I for one, would prefer if the actor did all, if not most, of the fighting sequences.
History. The first thing that people think of is Daredevil. The 2003 flop that he starred in opposite of Jennifer Garner and Jon Favreau. Really the only highlight of that movie was Colin Farrell as Bulls-eye. The role came at the beginning of the Super-hero craze which might have contributed to the bad reviews. Daredevil is not really the most popular comic book hero.
Competition. He’s going to have the same problem that George Clooney had when he played Batman (though most of us try to forget it). Michael Keaton did an amazing job as the first big screen Batman and Val Kimer was a great replacement. Christian Bale probably had a lot of pressure when he was cast in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy and is arguably the best person to put on the mask. Thus making it hard for Ben Affleck to take on the role. He’s got to replace him and the only way people will like it is if he does what Heath Ledger did with Joker and change the character and make it his own.
Now to the positives, the good things that could come from him playing Batman.
Experience. Yes he got bad reviews from his role as Matt Murdock in Daredevil, but this could actually be a good thing. He going to know all the things not to do when doing a super-hero movie. I think what really shot him in the foot with Daredevil, is that he just expected all this fame for the role because it was a super-hero movie and of course the movie came out with all that Bennifer hoopla was going on. He’s more grounded now and is more mature and he will certainly respect the role. I also think that his success as a director will help him with this. He know what it takes to make a good movie and will be able to bring another element to the role.
Fan base. Now that Ben Affleck has grown up and gotten mature, he has started making better decisions with his career. He has done some great movies, not just as a director, but as an actor. The Town was probably the best role he did since Good Will Hunting, even though he directed it. Argo is another one of those examples of him showing he can do more then just direct. The fact that he’s gotten batter as an actor and his success as a director has gotten a lot more people to like him and those people will go see the movie to support him.
Overall, it may not be the choice that anyone expected but it might be a good choice nonetheless. I think that we should just wait and see how it comes out before we pass judgment. So for now, the jury is out with me.
