As the snow begins its annual retreat, the sights and sounds of spring permeating throughout the Rocky Mountain Region act as a beacon for outdoor enthusiasts to lace up their hiking boots and return to nature.

This cabin fever is nothing unique to the Front Range, but is actually nothing short of nation-wide epidemic. To mark its end the National Parks Service has announced the dates of National Parks Week.

The annual celebration will take places April 17-25 with all 392 national parks offering free admission, in addition to family activities and special offers on tours, lodging, food, and souvenirs.

“We are rolling out the red carpet and inviting everyone to visit a national park and help celebrate National Park Week,” said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar in a press release. “Parks are fun and affordable destinations and great places to engage in healthy, outdoor activities, whether for a few hours or a few days.”

Other celebrations taking place during National Park week will include a 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a 75th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway (the nation’s most visited park), and National Junior Ranger Day, where kids can participate in hands-on activities and earn a certificate, patch, or pin.

A list of parks and promotions can be found at www.nps.gov/npweek .
