Most people probably already know that the upcoming movie Clash of the Titans is a remake of the 1981 classic of the same name, but what many may not realize is that the story itself is much older. According to Greek mythology, Perseus (the film's hero) is the founder of the city of Mycenae, which was located not far from Athens.
Legend states that he is the son of Zeus (the king of the Greek pantheon) and a human princess. When his mother was forced into an engagement with the king of the island nation where they resided, Perseus promised to bring them the head of Medusa as a gift. Along the way, Perseus received help from various gods of the Greek pantheon (including Hermes, Athena and Hades), after wandering aimlessly for quite some time. With their help, and a bit of luck, he was finally able to complete his task.
But he did not immediately return home with his prize. Stopping off in Ethiopia, he saved the princess Andromeda from being sacrificed to the sea monster Cetus, killing the monster in the process. As a reward, he requested that he be allowed to marry Andromeda, and his request was granted. After their marriage, and the founding of Mycenae, they became the city's first king and queen.
This remake is slated to be released into theaters on March 26, 2010. The original can be found on Amazon and Netflix.
