One day St John the Baptist rode into Everytown, U.S.A., and pronounced a repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Oddly, only apparently damned sinners showed up!
For, conspicuously, there were no Bishops, Parish pastors, priests, religious, parish council members, Grand Knights of Columbus, Committee leaders, Choir members, lectors, extraordinary eucharistic ministers, and Catholic social elites to be found!

Only the semi-excommunicated losers, dregs without social status, paupers without church approved 'charisms', crawled humbly to the prophet who prepared for the way of salvation.
But why?
Because all too many Catholics have become drunk on the Kool-Aid of the popular myth of the perfect saint and the absolutely damned sinner. Popular myth has it that certain kinds of people exude perfection and superiority--example, the Hollywood movie star and the music diva. Popular myth also has certain kinds of people excreting ugliness and imperfection--example, the traditional religious person and the conservative American.
And Catholics have bought into the lie!

Satan has weaved the myth that Bishops and priests and Catholic elites (among gullible and pop-shaped Catholic minds and hearts), are perfect saints, void of imperfection, full of popular charisma, socially acceptable, diva's, heroes, and lords. Satan has also weaved the myth that certain Catholics are dregs, inferior, only serving as followers, consumers, and fans.
That is why Catholics are great at helping the Guatemalan immigrant, but piss-poor at helping the locally aborted baby! That is why they vote for Pro-Choice Obama on Tuesday, and receive the Life giving Eucharist on Wednesday!

But truth be told! There is as much potential for concupiscence (lust and temptation) in the ordained and popular Catholic elite as there is in the uneducated, and socially awkward! And, of greater significance, there is as much grace for holiness (through repentance for the forgiveness of sins!) in one apparently damned prodigal sinner as there is in 99 socially satiated Catholic elite!
