The Mystery behind "Frito feet"

If you have ever had a new puppy, you have encountered the distinct smell they take home with them. More likely then not, you have had a whiff of puppy feet as your bundle of joy paws at you lovingly. A common assessment of this smell is the alluring scent of popcorn. Nicknamed "Frito feet" by many doggy enthusiasts, the question of what causes the odor is often uttered by new and old dog owners alike. So what does cause this strange occurrence? Groomer Melissa Mendoza claims, "Dogs sweat from the pads of their feet making them smell salty."

The fresh aroma is actually caused by sweat and bacteria. On the skin of all animals bacteria and yeast naturally  find their niche. The areas between toes and the spaces between the foot pads are prime locations for bacteria and yeast to grow and flourish. There is enough moisture and air circulation to satisfy the needs of these tiny parasites in these spots. These micro-organisms give off odors such as popcorn scent.

A bacteria called Pseudomas is renouned for giving off the salty, sweet smell of popcorn. This could be the main cause of "Frito feet" The bacteria is often associated ear and skin infections. Unless the smell is overwhelming, they is no cause for alarm. Bacteria is a natural organism to find on you pet, that helps strengthen your dogs immune system. Next time you smell "frito feet" be thankful that your healthy energetic pooch has feet that remind you of snack food.

If your dog has a particularly strong odor however, take your pup to the vet for a check up. The earlier you detect an infection the easier it is to take care of.
