‘The Muppets...Again!' rumor: Who’s having a wedding?

In what might be the first major scoop for “The Muppets…Again!” since Disney started production on the film, /Film reported on Feb. 11 that the sequel to 2011’s “The Muppets” might just feature a wedding with a major character.

[Obligatory spoiler warning: What follows is rumor and speculation about possible developments in the upcoming Muppets film.]

Of course, with that kind of spotlight, filled with fashion and all eyes on the bride – Muppet fans know there’s only one character who is suited for that kind of spectacle: Miss Piggy.

The news that Miss Piggy might be the star of her own wedding, if not actually get married, was leaked by production designer Eve Stewart in an interview with BBC’s The Film Programme after her BAFTA win for “Les Misérables.”

Stewart was walking about her upcoming projects when she let the big news slip, approximately 10:50 into the BBC segment:

Stewart: "I’m now at Pinewood doing the ‘Muppet Show’ [sic], and today has been one of the best days of my life, designing Miss Piggy’s wedding at the Tower of London.”
BBC: “Are you allowed to say that?”
Stewart: “Yes! [laughter] I’ve never been so happy.”

In her sharp-eyed scoop for /Film, Angie Han pointed out that Miss Piggy is wearing a rather substantial diamond ring on her left hand. Although it’s not technically positioned her ring finger, the diva only has four fingers and thus the ring’s placement might be a hint as to Miss Piggy’s relationship status.

If the Miss Piggy wedding rumors are true, whom is she supposed to wed? It’s hard to imagine anyone other then the frog in her life, the relationship-averse Kermit the Frog.

This wouldn’t the first time the two will have gone down the aisle. Muppet fans will remember the end of “The Muppets Take Manhattan.” In the 1984 movie, Miss Piggy and Kermit get married, sort of. Kermit thinks the wedding is part of the show the Muppet gang has been trying to put on, but a real minister officiates the ceremony instead of Gonzo. (The movie is just one of many scenes featuring Miss Piggy and Kermit focusing on their possible wedding.)

That ceremony, with its deliberate ambiguity, has left Muppet fans disagreeing as what happened? Are Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy married? Naturally Miss Piggy and Kermit maintain different positions in their subsequent public interviews: she says yes, he says no (and his eyes say nervous).

So are they or aren’t they? There’s no definitive answer, which may play a plot point in “The Muppets…Again!’

Also, rumors of a Miss Piggy wedding need not be taken any indication that a wedding will lead to a marriage.

What’s more, the possibility of a wedding may be yet another reference to earlier Muppet movies. In “The Muppets,” for example, the ceremony that took place in “The Muppets Take Manhattan” was referenced. Their wedding photo was torn asunder, representing the couple’s estranged relationship. In the movie, Kermit and Miss Piggy have an exchange that show their relationship is more complicated than mere comic relief.

With that in mind, “The Muppets...Again!” might feature Miss Piggy and Kermit’s moving to a less ambiguous status.

Yet another possibility is that a Miss Piggy wedding is part of the shenanigans that Disney has already revealed as the movie’s storyline. “The Muppets…Again” will feature a character named Constantine, a criminal mastermind who just happens to look like Kermit. Perhaps it’s Constantine who woos Miss Piggy for his nefarious purposes, especially seeing as he has evil designs to steal a diamond. Maybe at the Tower of London, perhaps?

As usual with films in production, such speculation is part of the fun of waiting for the movie to be released.

In this case “The Muppets…Again!” will be released March 21, 2014.
