Floyd Mayweather's recent tirade against Manny Pacquiao managed to simultaneously alienate and offend thousands of people and put himself back in the spotlight at the same time. Through unfounded claims, insults and not to mention more than a few racial overtones with some of what he was coming out with as well, Floyd has once again gotten the public's attention.
But what has yet to be revealed are the motivations behind this sudden outburst after months of silence. When numerous media outlets have asked for comments on the future of his fighting career recently, they have been told either that he has no comment or that he is currently on vacation. So why a home movie in the middle of the night, and why now, just days after Pacquiao vs. Margarito was confirmed as going ahead in November?
One of the biggest things that seems to shine through whenever Mayweather addresses the idea of either fighting Pacquiao or which of them is the best is jealousy. Despite the fact that he remains one of the most popular and biggest drawing fighters in the world, it's often apparent that Mayweather seems very insecure about the idea of someone else approaching the same level of fame or attention as him, and Pacquiao has done just that.
Part of this jealousy probably comes from the fact that Pacquiao is more famous and well liked in his home country than Floyd is in the United States. Pacquiao is a one man brand name in the Philippines, which is demonstrated by the fact that he in in demand in virtually every public medium, making regular appearances in film, television and on stage.
By contrast, outside of boxing Mayweather is really just another celebrity in the United States. Famous yes, but no more revered than any other major athlete, and he has far from captured the public imagination that other successful fighters have in the past.
If not the fact that he feels upstaged by his Filipino rival then the timing of the video might indicate that in this case Mayweather was looking to do some upstaging of his own. Knowing that Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito are in the middle of a press tour to promote their November fight, what better time to capture all the headlines and take attention away from a fight he will no doubt be hoping doesn't sell well?
Despite the nonsense he comes out with most of the time, Floyd is a lot more self aware than most give him credit for, and knows what he says is going to draw attention to himself. Last week he drew public attention by hinting at the location of his next fight, this week he made what most consider to be a racist video.
Next week? We will have to wait and see, but it isn't out of the realms of possibility that this is all part of a calculated campaign.
The third and probably most likely possible reason Mayweather might have ransacked his own reputation with his recent Ustream videos is simply because he couldn't stop himself.
While he wanted to talk about his shoe collection or how much he had spent on his most recent shopping trip, his viewers wanted to know about who he was fighting next, why he wouldn't fight Pacquiao and why his team denied negotiations which HBO later confirmed were indeed going on.
He even remarked at one point that his 'haters' had stayed up all night just to talk about Pacquiao, when of course 3am in the United States is the middle of the afternoon in the Philippines, and anyone who did stay up all night to watch what he had to say was probably either a fan of his or looking to write about him.
If he did indeed bite the bait and just lose his cool on the videos, then it shows above anything else than he ought to hire someone to help him with public relations. His frequent target Manny Pacquiao might not always be eager to reveal much to the western media at least, but in this case he seems to have chosen the right course of action. When asked by 8CTNews' Brad Cooney to comment on Mayweather's video for example, Pacquiao simply said:
"I don't want to make a comment on that because it was a very uneducated statement. I understand him, maybe he wants someone to praise him and not me."
One of the big reasons Floyd might have been entertaining the idea of signing with Don King recently is the fact that as good as he is in the ring, he isn't particularly gifted when it comes to public relations. King might not have been merely bragging when he said he could make Mayweather into the next Muhammad Ali, but a big part of that would be keeping Floyd and his relatives in check when it comes to what they say to the media.
Nigel Hart, Philly: "He must have known that he would get attention by bringing all that race stuff into it talking about sushi and everything. Normal trash talking is fine but if another fighter said the same things about him being black he would be up in arms"
Bill Rigby, Pittsburgh: "Everything he says he just hemorrages more and more fans, there isn't any subtlety or charm there he just sounds desperate"
