Have you ever stopped to ponder which model of car sells the most around the world? Wonder no more as the ubiquitous Toyota Corolla has achieved that enviable distinction.
Polk’s global new vehicle registration data from IHS Automotive reveals a five percent jump in Corolla sales last year. The recently redesigned and highly economical sedan sold 1,098,524 million units in 2013, which does not include the other names the vehicles sells under in some of the 150 countries where it is marketed.
The vehicle is sold as the Corolla sedan with other variations such as Corolla Axio, Corolla Altis and Corolla EX 4-door sedans. These names describe trim levels of the Corolla sold in various regions including Japan. The model is also sometimes badged as Fielder and Rumion 5-door wagons.
Combining all badges under which the Corolla is sold, total global sales in 2013 equaled 1.22 million vehicles – the most of any single model type in the world.
Since it’s introduction during 1966, the Toyota Corolla has sold a grand total of 40.72 million cars as of February 2014 making it the top selling vehicle of all time.
“The Corolla stands as the international face of Toyota and touches millions of people across the globe every day,” said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. “Being the world’s best-selling car speaks volumes about the satisfaction and loyalty our customers feel about the Corolla and Toyota.”
In the US, the Corolla produced sales of over 300,000 models in 2013, a 4 percent increase year-over-year. Best of all, 97 percent of all Corollas sold in the U.S. were built in North America.
The Toyota Corolla was also named a top safety pick in 2013 by the IIHS and was awarded a 5-star rating for overall safety by the NHTSA, the highest grade awarded by the agency.
All in all, it’s a big achievement for a little car that’s come a long, long way since 1966.
