January was a big month for Boston Magic: the Gatheirng players.  It started with a review of the Best Magic: the Gathering cards of 2009, and Worldwake spoilers began pumping on the first of January with  Comet Storm.

From the Vault: Relics was announced, with many players postulating on what could possibly be included in the newest FTV release.  We opened our Magic Mailbag and responded to a letter asking about Combating Sneak Attack, giving useful strategies that any player can use on how to metagame.

A new Magic: the Gatheirng graphic novel called Path of the Planeswalker was released this past month, showcasing Magic's web comics.  Hopefully there will be many more Magic: the Gathering graphic novels in the future.  We also received a sneak glimpse of Archenemy, a new "one vs. many" multiplayer variant and product that will be coming later this year on June 18.

Worldwake previews began to pick back up with Kitesail Apprentice, and a few other new Worldwake commons.  We were then treated to Dragonmaster Outcast, in addition to Admonition AngelChain Reaction, and Raging Ravine.

Afficianados of Zendikar's traps were delighted to see Stone Idol Trap, and vampire lovers embraced Anowon, the Ruin Sage.  Black players recieved Abyssal Persecutor, while green players got Avenger of Zendikar. Quest for Ula's Temple made playing with a Kraken, Lveiathan, Octopus, or Serpent slightly less awful.  We were then served a giant helping of beef, err elephant, with Terastodon, and given a lovely limited mana fixer in the form of Pilgrim's Eye.

Scholar's in Bridgewater, MA upped the prize payouts for their Unlimited proxy Vintage tournaments on Mondays

The month culminated when we learned that Magic artist Steven Belledin would appear at the Boston Worldwake prerelease, we recieved the full Worldwake spoiler, and later got some stories from the Boston Worldwake prerelease.

If January was any indicator of the state of Magic, it would be a healthy one.  February is sure to hold a lot in store for Boston Magic: the Gathering players as they'll finally be able to draft Worldwake at local Friday Night Magic events.

How much will Worldwake affect constructed formats?  Will Worldwake have an impact on older formats such as Legacy and Vintage?  We'll find out later this month.

Worldwake is the second Magic: the Gathering expansion set in the Zendikar block.  The official release date for Worldwake is February 5th.  One may purchase Worldwake on or after February 5th from Harrison's on 252 Essex St, in Salem, Massachusetts 01970 Phone: (978) 741-0786 or from any of the other places to play Magic in Boston.
