With the first of the month just around the corner, there will certainly not be a lack of places to visit and things to see this coming weekend. Like the tide, high times tend to rise and arrive on our Nashville shores at the beginning of the month. I'll provide the water below and allow you to surf wherever you like.
This Thursday, just before the 1st of the month, you can get a head start on the weekend with one of the best. Artist Tiffany Dyer is very excited about her latest solo exhibition titled "Don't Look at Truckers and Always Wear Clean Underwear." Located at Gallery 121 at Belmont University, this Thursday, from 5-7pm, Dyer will have an opening reception and talk about her work that addresses "society's guide for raising a girl." The talk will start promptly at 5:30pm. In a city that has more substance than surface, just imagine how much substance will be talked about and shown underneath the title of this exhibition. Trust me, it will end January with a fun bang.
Then, Friday will be jammed packed full of activities and fun galore. I might as well do the outline thing to make it easy on your eyes and plans ahead. Try the following: (in my ranked order nonetheless)
1) Party with Meg, Bret, Victoria, and more at Art & Invention Gallery from 5-7pm. Victoria Schwab, one of Nashville's brightest and best author on the global rise, is having a party to launch her latest work "The Archived" that will include book signings, good jokes, good company, sweets to eat, and possibly a glass of champagne for those of age and up to it.
2) Join another opening reception party just south of town with the amazing Lesley Patterson-Marx to celebrate her latest art. From 6-9pm, at O'More College of Design (423 South Margin Street, Franklin, TN), Lesley is ready and excited to share her latest exhibition of printmaking and mixed media artwork. The show will be on view until the end of March, but Friday will be a great night to meet and talk with the artist herself. She is a real nice person. You should support her art.
3) The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is opening "Tracing Time/Marking Movement" in the Gordon CAP Gallery. San Francisco artist Camille Utterback uses four interactive installations which link computational systems to human movement to explore the relationship between the Physical and Digital. It is a wonderful trip for anyone in front of a live computer generated animations further explore the relationship between painting and kinetic imagery.
4) Party at The Plowhaus? Yes, there is a party at The Plowhaus. From 6-9pm, Michael ClenDening will be showing his 3D art created from constructed and found objects while Johnny Lee Park's sensual nudes complete the walls and show titled "Machinisms and The Body." Oh, and there will be wine too.
5) Another month means another Collectors Art Night on 5th Avenue of the Arts in Downtown Nashville. The event, always hosted by Paul Polycarpou, editor of Nashville Arts Magazine, is a progressive event highlighted by art talks at The Rymer Gallery, Tinney Contemporary, and The Arts Company. Cocktails begin at 5:30pm. At 6pm, LA Bachman and Susan Maakestad will talk about their spectacular art at The Rymer Gallery. At 6:45pm, Lisa Weiss will talk about her latest work at Tinney Contemporary. At 7:15pm, painter Jane Braddock will give an in-depth conversation at The Arts Company. Out of outline form, I can now throw a few things from Saturday, February 2nd, your way. You can do all of the art crawls around downtown surrounding The Arcade and one you should stop by first or last before leaving should be the one at Blend Studio. Bataille and Spider: An Exhibition of selected work by Philippe Pirrip will be ongoing from 6-9pm. The artist will be on site that night and I'm sure he won't be the only artist walking around for you to meet and greet with around downtown. But before you even get to Saturday night, you should make it a point to mark your alarm clock for 2pm. It is then when you need to check out Southern Word and everything they have to offer at East Branch Library, 206 Gallatin Road. The Black History House's Freestyle Gallery, some of the city's top freestyle artists will take prompts from the audience and weave them into powerful message about the past and the future. Sunday will be a day for football, but I'd like to let you know about two more things before I go this week. First, I need to let all you artists out there know about a project budget ready to allocate $150,000 for one artwork or multiple, related artworks. Southeast Davidson Public Library and Regional Community Center is having a national call to artists to design, fabricate, and install artworks before March 2014. You have to be above 18 years of age with a minimum of 2 years professional experience. The deadline for submission is Friday, March 8th, at 1am Central Time. Last but not least, to combine art, music, and Nashville's growing literary scene, you can get all of the above in one spot next Tuesday, February 5th, at Rumours East at 7pm. It is then when and where I will host the next East Side Storytellin' show. It is an hour of readings and original storytelling via songs and published books. The featured music will be performed by Jonathan Sexton and the reading will be performed by New York Times Bestselling author Alice Randall. You won't want to miss out on this.
