The Mississippi Tea Party has it's fingerprints all over the Mississippi Legislature, proposing and passing bills that will have an impact on all Mississippians, both positively and negatively. Just yesterday, the Republican controlled House passed a bill named the "Sunshine Law", and the purpose of the law is to limit the power of Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood. Tea Party member Rep. Beckie Currie has introduced a bill called the Illegal Immigration Enforcement Bill, similar to the bill in Alabama. The bill was referred to the House Judicary B Committee, chaired by conservative Rep. Andy Gipson, and the bill was also referred to the House Education Committee, chaired by Rep. John Moore, also a member of the Tea Party. On January 20, 2012, newly elected Governor Phil Bryant welcomed a delegation of members of the Tea Party for a meeting to discuss the Legislative Agenda for 2012. At the meeting key agenda items were introduced by Mississippi Tea Party included: iilegal immigration, tenth amendment issues, equtiable property tax, education reform, welfare program reform, and zero based budgeting.
Talk of the demise of the Tea Party has been widespread over the past few weeks, and in some states it might be true. But in Mississippi the Tea Party is alive and kicking, and it looks like to me that they have some big plans in store for the state of Mississippi. God help us!
