I should probably start this piece off by mentioning that Nick Baldridge is a good friend of mine. So, there might be some people who may think this makes me a little biased, and maybe I am. However, I'm also fairly confident in my ability to identify talent when I see it. Sure, ultimately it is up to the individual to determine the significance of a piece of art, and so I encourage everyone reading this to visit Nick's website (http://www.memoryinvestigation.com) and have a look for yourself. Most of you will surely see why this friend has a reason to be biased, because it just makes sense. In all my years as a musician, and as a writer, I have met few people that possess such a fierce and fiery passion for their work like Nick Baldridge does, and his art is representative of that dedication. I recently had a chance to chat with Nick, and ask him a few questions about what makes him tick as an artist.
Q: How long have you been making art?
A: Off and on, since I was 9 years old. I took a ten year break, in which I focused on music, from age 16 to 26. From 26 to the present, I've been working on art daily.
Q: Who are some artists that you look up to?
A: My brother, J.B. (writer, musician, artist) has had the most influence on me.
Q: What are your goals as an artist?
A: To be able to live, and actually be free...free from a slave job. To be able to live life doing what you want, not what you have to.
Q: Do you have any favorite galleries around town?
A: Yes, the David B. Smith Gallery (1543 Wazee Street Denver, CO 80202)
Q: Do you have any advice for young, aspiring artists?
A: Be Persistant. People who keep doing it, get to keep doing it.
Q: What different factors influence you and/or the artwork you make?
A: Usually things that aren't related to the art itself. For example: writing, exercise, music, acting, etc.
Q: Any favorite local artists?
A: Yes, she goes by the name "VETA". She'll be at the show on April 2nd.
Q: That leads me to my next question. When and where is your next show taking place?
A: On April 2nd, 2010 at 1516 Wazee. I'll be there unveiling a children's book/graphic novel that I made in collaboration with my brother, J.B., and VETA.
Q: My last question is a little odd, but it's one that I like to ask everyone I meet. What's your favorite band/artist of all-time?
A: Nick Drake.
