The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act: Why you should Surge on the Senate

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act allows military members to claim a state of legal residence and maintain that home throughout their career, regardless of where they move. This can be the state in which the member lived before entering the service, or a state that the service member has lived in at some point in their military career. This allows some tax relief, and makes moving from one state to another easier.

H.R. 1182 would amend the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to guarantee spouses the same provisions as their service members regarding aspects such as voting in their home of record, keeping a driver’s license in their home of record, and paying personal property taxes and state income taxes in the home of record.

In plain English, this means that military spouses would not be required to change their voter's registration and driver's license each time they move.  Additionally, it would free military spouses from being treated as second-class citizens in regard to motor vehicle registration.  Many spouses are forced to remove their names from vehicle registrations to avoid paying vehicle taxes in their state of residence.  Finally, it would simplify tax filing, especially for those spouses who maintain employment through telecommuting to their state of record.

According to the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act Facebook page,

DC Area Spouses Are Invited - Senate Bill 475, Military Spouses Residency Relief Act, which provides the option of a home state to Military Spouses, will be heard in a Senate Hearing, Wednesday April 29th. Wow. Thanks for this info, Karen. I can never get over the fact that it took them so long to tend to the obvious. How many hours get lost in all that paperwork shuffle for spouses who move? Amazing.
