Your usual choices for local road races are the 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon. If you're looking for something different, you may want to check out the Encinitas Mile, coming to Vulcan Avenue in Encinitas on March 16.
Why the mile? According to the race organizers, the mile is the perfect race distance for experienced and beginning runners alike. New runners can tackle a race without committing to running more miles than they may be ready to run. Experienced runners can work on their speed at short distances, something they are rarely able to do off a track or under race conditions.
The race will take place on Vulcan Avenue in Encinitas. It will begin at F Street and continue to Santa Fe Avenue where they will turn around for their final half-mile. There are several heats including a kids' mile (for kids aged 6 to 12), masters, open men and women and a dog mile for runners wanting to participate with their pooch. Charity partners include the Coastal German Shepard Rescue of San Diego and local running hero, Meb Keflezighi's MEB Foundation.
