Watermelons, cantaloupes, casabas, honeydew. These are just some varieties of nutritious melons that are low in saturated fats and sodium and high in dietary fiber, vitamins A & C and potassium. Interesting fact: I bet you didn't know that watermelon has as much iron as spinach.
Now you have the opportunity to celebrate the mighty melon by attending the 55th annual Melon Festival in Milan, Ohio being held on Saturday, August 31, Sunday, September 1 and Monday, September 2. Milan is approximately a one hour drive from Cleveland.
Milan Melon Festival Taking place on the Milan Village Square, the Milan Melon Festival expects more than 50,000 people to attend. This family-friendly event will feature a wide variety of fun activities for all age groups. And of course, there will be lots and lots of melons.
The one thing you don't want to miss is the culinary delight of eating the watermelon sherbet and the cantaloupe ("mussmelon") ice cream.
Activities at the Festival include an antique car cruise-in, watermelon balancing, a recliner race, a Beautiful Baby contest, a cornhole tournament, a chalk drawing contest, a Big Wheel race, a Queen's contest, a 5K & Fun Run, a kids' pedal tractor pull and a Grand Parade (Sunday at 2 p.m.).
This year there will also be a Pizza Eating contest and a Milk Shake contest.
There will be plenty of live, free musical entertainment with performers including Casey Weston ( a finalist on the first season of "The Voice"), Nashville Crush (country and rock), the Womack Bros. Band and G-Force (three little sisters).
Hours for the Milan Melon Festival are 9 a.m - 11 p.m. on Saturday, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Sunday and 8 a.m - 6 p.m. on Monday. Admission is free. Parking is also free.
