This seems to be the off-season of the one-year deal.
More than a handful of noteworthy NFL stars have signed short-term contracts as a result of the lockout, with not as much time to evaluate players and make long term commitments.
Ronnie Brown’s deal with Philly is for one-year, Braylon Edwards’ deal with the San Francisco 49ers is for one-year worth $3.5 million and Plaxico Burress signed a one-year deal with the Jets worth $3.017 million.
So if Brett Favre is interested in playing for the Dolphins, why not sign him especially knowing it would be short term anyway?
The former Packers, Jets and Vikings star would only help make Miami an immediate contender this season.
Miami starter Chad Henne is probably in better shape but Brett Favre is the better quarterback.
Favre’s age at 41 doesn’t seem to bother Dolphins coach Tony Sparano.
When asked if the team was considering signing Favre, Sparano said with a grin, “I can’t rule anything out. That will be all over the news now too but I am giving you the only answer I can give you. We brought in Tiki Barber (for a workout) and you guys obviously know Tiki’s age. We signed Jason Taylor. We are going to flip whatever rocks are necessary in this process.”
However, the reality is Henne will be the starter when the season starts.
It would be a different story if Favre came out and said he would really like to play for the team like Burress did a few weeks ago.
But with no clear commitment from Favre and with such a short time left before the season begins, Miami would be better off focusing on the guys they have now.
Favre, by the way, has passed for 71,838 yards with 508 touchdowns and 336 interceptions in his career. He has played in 302 games and in 244 of those contests he completed at least one touchdown pass.
