I've been to the pyramids in Egypt. I touched the side of their rough stones and it was amazing. What amazes me more is the we have an unbelievable number of pyramids right next to us in Mexico. And how many have you seen - or touched?
The pyramids in Mexico were used for anything from physical sports games, elaborate temples, sacrificial sites and even to beg for fertility. In most states you can visit several significant pyramids in a single day! The major civilizations that built these pyramids were the Olmec, Teotihuacan, Toltec, Aztec and the Mayan. Most of us are familiar with the Mayan calendar :)
Some of the sites have museums, stores and other interesting artifacts. If you don't know where to start, start with some of the top five sites:
- Chichen Itza
- Monte Alban
So when is the best time to visit these sites?
Central Mexico: April, August & October
Chiapas: October - May
Gulf Coast: November - April
Oaxaca: October - March
Yucatan: November - April
