The National Alliance of the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is a national organization that helps people with mental illnesses as well as their family and friends. NAMI offers support, education, and advocacy for them. In addition, they also help fight the stigma of mental illness. Their website is very informative. You can check it out here.

The mentally ill consumers and their family members both need support and education on the different disorders as well as how to cope. In Modesto, they are able to take part in the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill (NAMI) of Stanislaus County

They offer a Family to Family class that

  • Educates participants on such mental illnesses as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.
  • Offers information on medications and their side effects
  • Covers types of treatment for recovery
  • Teaches coping techniques, communication skills, and problem solving skills
  • Teaches ways to help in times of crisis
  • Teaches what it is like for the mentally ill consumer
  • Tells how to care of oneself to prevent burnout
  • Tells where to find support and services
  • Offers classes in Spanish
  • Is free of charge

It is not necessary to be a member to take advantage of these classes. However, if you choose to, you can become a member for added benefits such as the newsletter The Advocate, member discounts, access to a members only online community,and a discount to the national convention. Once you are a member, you become a member of the national organization, the California organization, and the Stanislaus county organization. 

The membership fee is $15.00 for a client and $35.00 for a family member or friend per year.

On the various NAMI websites, you will find news articles, a newsletter, service providers, consumer resources, resources for veterans and the incarcerated, as well as information for law enforcement, mental health legislation information, and facts and statistics of the various mental disorders.

    Thank you for bringing light to a MUCH needed resource. It is sad that people who have mental illness are still stigmatized.
