Lisbon is distracted during the team’s case on the murder of a young model. Jane notices Lisbon’s lack of focus and guesses that it is about Tommy Volker, who Lisbon swore she would catch. Lisbon tells Jane to leave it to her. Like Jane feels the Red John case is his, so Lisbon feels it is her duty to take down Volker after letting him slip through her fingers and kill an innocent witness she interviewed.
The sadistic Volker is a probable Red John accomplice. He is well-connected enough to get Lisbon’s demands for warrants against him turned down by almost every judge. She gains a warrant to look into his financial records which gives her a possible lead: a man who Volker likely hired to murder some of his victims. She manages to convince a different judge to sign a warrant for her to get further information on the possible hit man, but before she can get to him for an interview, he is mysteriously murdered. Although it is not so mysterious to Lisbon and her team as to who was behind it. Finally, Lisbon asks for Jane’s help, recognizing that she cannot catch Volker alone.
The preview for next week’s episode shows that the hunt for Volker continues. It calls the standoff between Jane and Volker “the biggest showdown of the season.” This is good and bad news. On the downside, if the biggest showdown of the season is between Jane and Volker then there probably will not be a showdown directly between Jane and Red John. On the upside, the next episode promises to be a thrilling one. From what is known of Volker from past episodes, he is almost as sadistic as red John, watching with a twisted smile as a crony strangles a witness. Plus his hitting on Lisbon with innuendo and constant eye-roving is pretty creepy. He seems to have formed a particular attachment to her that parallels Red John’s attachment to Jane.
