The meaning of stars

See also

The word "star" has several meanings in the Bible : Celestial body or angel. But the stars that were made in Genesis 1:16 are celestial bodies like our sun. They were created on the fourth day of Creation week. A star is a giant sphere of gas (nuclear fuel) with internal temperatures of millions of degrees. Our sun is an average size yellow star that is the center of our solar system but not the center of the universe.

Each star is unique (I Corinthians 15:41). Centuries before the advent of the telescope, the Bible declared what only God and His angels knew that each star varies in size and intensity (magnitude).

There is an incalculable number of stars in the universe (Jeremiah 33:22). The Bible compares the number of stars with the number of the grains of sand on the seashore (Genesis 22:17; Hebrews 11:12). At a time when less than 5,000 stars were visible to the human eye, God stated that the stars of heaven were innumerable. Not until the 17th century did Galileo glimpse the immensity of the universe with his new telescope. Today, astronomers estimate that there are ten thousand billion trillion stars that is a 1 followed by 25 zeros! Yet, as the Bible states scientists admit this number may be woefully inadequate.

The number of stars, though vast are finite (Isaiah 40:26). Although man is unable to calculate the exact number of stars, we now know their number is finite. Of course God knew this all along. "He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names" (Psalm 147:4)(KJV). What an awesome and magnificent God we have. Amen!

No new stars are being created according to the Bible, because Creation was finished on the seven day (Genesis 2:1-2). Angels are also called stars (Revelation 1:20). The star mentioned in Matthew 2:9-11 is an angel. The wise men (no number mentioned) followed this star (angel) from the east and it went before them and stood over the house where the young child Jesus (about two years old) was with Mary. "When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh." This Scripture plainly and clearly tells us that the wise men did not see Jesus' birth but arrived about two years later when He was in a house.
