Thomas wakes up in a strange place called the Glade. He has nothing left of his memory, except for his first name. Where is he? What’s he doing here?
When Thomas wakes to find himself in a different world, he also finds he is not alone. The enclosed structure known only as the Glade is populated by other boys. The tall, stone walls that are said to be for their protection from “Grievers,” monsters who live in the maze. The maze walls surround the walls that make up the Glade.
Each day, a few of the kids are chosen as runners. Runners venture out into the labyrinth and try to map the ever-changing pattern in the attempt to exit the maze. When Thomas is brought to the Glade, strange things begin to happen. The other boys grow suspicious of him.
Thomas finds the maze a bit familiar, however he is unable to figure out why. He has extraordinary abilities as a runner but he is still lost when it comes to the maze.
A girl arrives in the Glade. She delivers a message to the rest of the runners – she will be the last runner to arrive, as the end is near.
