The Matching Dots girls clothing line (Photos)

Be cool. Be glamorous. Be spotted. That is the motto of The Matching Dots, an adorable clothing line specializing in polka dot prints designed for girls from 12 months to 8 years. The company also carries outfits for mothers who want to coordinate with their daughters or for women who just want to stand out in the crowd. Others products in their collection include accessories and pieces for dolls and dogs. At the recent tradeshow in NYC called The Children’s Club, Examiner had the pleasure of sitting down for a Q&A with the founders of The Matching Dots.

When did you start The Matching Dots and how did the concept come up?

It all started with a party! The inspiration for The Matching Dots came to me in 2011 when I hosted a birthday party for my then two year old daughter, and I wanted us to wear matching dresses. I was surprised that all I could find was identical clothes - family photo style. At around the same time one of my best friends, who graduated from a world-renowned Fashion Design School in Italy, decided she was ready to start her own line, after having worked with two large, famous designers in London and in Brazil. That's when the idea was born. We decided to create a clothing line for girls that would also offer stylishly coordinating pieces specially designed for women; for special occasions or for turning every day into a special one.

Will the collection always feature only dots or do you have plans to expand into other types of prints?

Our designs will always have polka dots because there is so much we can do with them!! Augusta, my business partner and our designer, is always coming up with fun and stylish ways to play with the dots. We always have a lot of fun creating our designs, and our customers have loved this concept!

What are the main materials you use for the dresses?

We have items that are all knit or all woven. We also may combine the two materials. Our wovens are 100% cotton and our knits are a blend of rayon and spandex.

The Matching Dots has five different categories: Girls, Women, Dogs, Dolls and Headbands. Will you be adding any new categories in the next year or so? If so, which ones?

We don’t have any plans to add new categories in the next year, but we know we eventually want to have a boy line as well as a line for infants.

What is your favorite and/or best-selling item this Spring 2013?

My favorite dress is the Greer. I love the combination of navy and lime green. We have found that different moms like a variety of our dresses for themselves and their daughters. Our two most popular girl items right now are the Georgia Kate and the Little Chloe. Most orders include a combining headband as well.
