The Maryland Native Plant Society always emphasizes one plant family each year and 2014 is the Year of the Rose. Christopher Puttock will be giving a talk, "Introduction to the Rose Family in Maryland," on Jan 28 at the Kensington Library. It will start at 7:30 p.m. Many native plants belong to the rose family, including strawberry, black cherry, and chokeberry. These plants range in size from herbs to trees. The Patterson Park Audubon Center seeks volunteers for youth bird monitoring on Jan 31. The hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Participants would collect data on urban bird species and earn service hours.
