The Mars Volta Breaks up

It’s a sad day in the world of music in Texas. The Mars Volta has officially split up.

Cedric Bixler-Zavala took to Twitter last night to announce the news. In his tweets, he goes on to blame guitarist and fellow founding member Omar Rodriguez-Lopez for the break up. According to Cedric, too much of Omar’s attention was going towards Bosnian Rainbows (his new band with fellow Mars Volta drummer Deantoni Parks) and not The Mars Volta.

The El Paso band formed in 2001 and had a successful run. The Mars Volta were named "Best Prog-Rock Band" by Rolling Stone magazine in 2008. A year later, at the 51stGrammy Awards, they won the Grammy for the song "Wax Simulacra"in the "Best Hard Rock Performance" category.

The Mars Volta’s last album, Noctourniquet, was released in 2012. Cedric tweeted that he planned to have a full scale North American tour for it, but claims Omar did not seem interested. He went on to repeatedly thank their fans for all their support throughout the years and says he will continue to go on with his music.

Months before the break up, The Mars Volta had announced they were on hiatus - so now it's become more of a permanent thing. But who knows! They have broken up before...

Right before forming The Mars Volta, the two split up from their post-hardcore band At the Drive-In, and then reunited in 2012, mostly performing at music festivals.

So, fans can only hope for a reunion tour like that one from The Mars Volta as of now. Maybe this time we won’t have to wait over a decade for it!
