The Man Of The Hour May Be Coming To The CW

The CW TV network, seen in the Fargo-Moorhead-Grand Forks market on WDAY channel 6/8.2 as a digital sub channel is developing another seemingly odd choice for a second superhero-themed show.

The network did carry over Smallville, which chronicled Superman’s coming of age and then followed it up with a restructuring of the Green Arrow with the series Arrow. This may have seemed like a step down in both power and popularity as far as superheroes goes, but the Green Arrow has been a regular in DC comics in some form since the 1940s.

The latest step in what may be a version of the DC universe carried by the CW network, is a character who goes back to the 1940s, but does not have a regular comic book, nor appears to be a regular part of the DC comic book universe.

That character is, Hourman. Hourman debuted in Adventure Comics in 1940. Rex Tyler was a chemist who developed a pill called Miraclo which gave him increased strength, endurance, and speed for an hour. The character was popular enough to be a charter member of the Justice Society of America, comics’ first major super hero team.

The character has been through some comics permutations. This includes Rex Tyler’s son, who had, more or less, the same abilities as the original. There was also an android-like entity who had time manipulation abilities.

If there will be a Hourman on the CW, that concept, too, has gone through a couple of permutations. One idea that was disclosed was to have a character that could see ahead one hour in time.

The latest idea that is out there involves the Miraclo drug, but in a different way. The idea that is currently being reported is that a different person will get the drug each episode and that person will have a different set of powers that will last one hour.

Hourman has had an interesting career thus far. He has gone from a hero near the beginning of the start of superhero comics and taken through several incarnations. The character may now be a TV star. The character might even be several characters at this point.

There is nothing settled at this point as to what, or who Hourman will be at this point if the series survives development and emerges at the other end as an actual TV show and a possible part of a TV superhero universe.
