There is so much being offered at The Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse in Fallston at the crossroads of Bel Air Road and Route 152 that it is hard to compress it all in one story. It is a fine dining restaurant, a martini/tapas bar, al fresco dining deck (weather permitting), a raw bar-sushi, lites bites, steamed crabs, and a large entertainment center called the Tiki Bar, which has multiple TV screens, food and holds 300 people.
Connections!!!
For me, my connection was Christa and Davide Rossi, former chef/owners of Pazza Luna Restaurant in Locust Point, which was one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore. Chef Rossi has a deft hand, a good sense of flavors and textures and has never disappointed me with any dish he prepared. Chef Rossi is the consulting executive chef at The Mallet and his wife Christa, manages the front of the house. Is their menu strictly Italian, NO -mainly seafood and steak, although there are a selection of pasta dishes that I can assure you will not disappoint. The Mallet Restaurant has a consortium of owners, headed up by Tony Ashe, General Manager and Christa’s uncle. “Connections!!!” (sing like the song “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof.)
First level
Let me narrow in a focus on the first level where white linens are prevalent in the dining room and happy hour specials reign supreme at the martini/tapas bar and let me not forget the tastefully appointed private party room. The colors are of nature; grey and blue of the sea and the sky and brown tones of the earth. Where the menu items might seem typical for the area it is the execution and taste that far exceeds expectations. The menu can be viewed at the website http://www.malletrestaurant.com.
While there during a media dinner, a number of the press tasted and really, really enjoyed a number of dishes from the daily special mushroom soup, sushi, crab cake, chicken roulade, flounder Mantanzas and a chocolate mousse to finish the meal. (see slide show)
Second level, not like the first
The lower level is home to the raw and sushi bar and the place your mallet will be handy for the year round steamed crabs. Weather permitting there is an outdoor patio as well where you can dig into a captain’s catch of steamed crustaceans.
Take a couple steps further and you are in the Tiki Bar home to weeknight and weekend entertainment. The Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse is similar to its predecessor, Pecora’s that brought in national talent in its day like the Four Tops, Bobby Rydell, Pat Cooper, Vic Damone, Frank Sinatra Jr.among others. Recently, the Tiki Bar was host to a private party with reality television star and national recording artist Bret Michaels, lead singer for the acclaimed rock band Poison.
